Top 5 racing franchises in video games

written by TheRacingGamer

testdriveunlimitedBecause you like to go fast, we run down the greatest racing video games of all time.

No. 5 Test Drive
One of the oldest racing franchises is also one of the best. Test Drive has a somewhat checkered past, but all of that was forgotten with the release of Test Drive Unlimited in 2006. The “massively multiplayer online” experience featured 1000 miles of virtual Hawaian terrain to explore, and reminded us what Test Drive was capable of.

No. 4 Driver
Not really a racer per say, but a great driving game. Like “Grand Theft Auto” on driving crack. With a friend, the mission-based car games is even better, as two player split screen affords the ability to player tag or cat and mouse for a good four to five hours at a time. Good stuff.

No. 3 Need for Speed
First appearing in 1994, Need For Speed is a household name when it comes to racing games. Thanks to explosive visuals, numerous spin-offs, and intense police pursuits, the series has managed to stay relevant after all these years. With the series breaking off into three seperate genres this year—simulation, arcade, and MMO—the future remains bright.

No. 2 Forza Motorsport
Despite having fewer cars and tracks than the venerable Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport is easily the most wired racing game ever made. Online tournaments, downloadable content, and a killer soundtrack help the Xbox-exclusive stay fresh and edgy, something other racing games often lack.

No. 1 Gran Turismo
Surprise! Was there ever any question what number one on our list would be? I mean, Gran Turismo is the original gangster of simulation racing games. Hundreds of cars. Ridiculous amounts of tuning and settings. And stunning graphics—even without vehicle damage. The series took racing gamers by storm and has never looked back.

Well I think that Forza is a better game than the GT series, i admit the number one spot does go to GT due to being the pioneer for the simulation racing games, but that said Forza has handily beaten it as GT has not evolved enough
