This review is from: PlayStation Portable Limited Edition Madden NFL 11 Entertainment Pack – Piano Black (Video Game)

    PROS about this item:
-Allows internet browsing (also has an old version of flash player, so some video sites or flash based sites can be viewed)
-Music can be uploaded onto it
-Movies can be played (only UMD movies, the movies are somewhat popular and they also have anime for those anime fans out there)
    -Has some nice games
-Can be used as a cellphone (you have to look up how on google, you can also use Skype)
-You can attach a camera to it somehow. I have not yet figured it out

    CONS:
-The $169 PSPs do not come with a memory stick
-Does not come with USB cable to hook up to computer or laptop (if you have any USB cables lying around they may be compatible with the PSP. Instead of having to buy a SONY PSP specific cable, I was able to use a cable that was for my mp3. Worked perfectly)
-There are not that many games for the PSP

If considering whether or not to buy this, MAKE SURE you also buy a SONY Memory Stick Pro Duo card (comes in different gigs)AND NO YOU CANNOT USE JUST ANY SD CARD AS A MEMORY CARD. IT WONT WORK. For some reason SONY decided not to include one, which was a stupid move. Things you won’t be able to do without a memory stick:
-Can’t watch YouTube videos because there’s not enough memory (idk why)
    -Can’t perform system update
-Can’t sign up for Playstation Network or access Playstation Store
-Can’t save games, upload music, watch movies, or even connect the PSP to your computer using a USB cable(again idk why)

Basically, all you can do without a memory stick is browse the internet. If you are thinking about buying the $200 PSPs because it comes with a memory stick while this one does not, DON’T. The memory card it comes with is only 32 MB. That is NOTHING. Instead of paying $30 extra you can pay $20 or less to get an 8 GB. With an 8 GB memory stick, your PSP will now be just like an 8 GB iPod Touch. I hope this review was helpful to you.

Great bundle to get a PSP, October 22, 2010

This review is from: PlayStation Portable Limited Edition Madden NFL 11 Entertainment Pack – Piano Black (Video Game)

    First,

this is basically a core PSP 3000 with the additional bonus of a free game, NFL 2011, for the same price as the PSP 3000 core (without the game) is still selling for.

As a bundle, it is incomplete, since you won’t be getting a memory stick, which is indispensable to save a game’s progress, mp3s, etc.

Also, if you want to connect the PSP directly to your PC or Mac to copy content to it, you’ll need a usb cable that matches the PSP port. It’s a common standard and chances are that you have it already if you have a digital cam.

On the other hand, ordering a memory stick to go along with the bundle isn’t rocket science and you can get a bigger capacity stick for $30 or less than Sony would have included in a bundle for $199.

Secondly, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, has recently claimed that iphone/ipod touch/ipad games are now outselling PSP and Nintendo DS games. So, people compare an iphone with a PSP. I did it, too. My advice: don’t compare the two when it comes to gaming and you want the iphone to win.

The PSP is by far the better gaming device. While iphone games are usually a lot cheaper, I still have to find a game that doesn’t suck for lack of depth, the touch controls or both. The iphone/ipod touch is a very decent pocketable computing device that does a lot of things the PSP doesn’t do well or at all, but gaming isn’t its strength. Others might disagree, but if you’re looking for a portable console-like gaming experience, it’s either the Nintendo DS or the PSP.

With this PSP you can play downloadable games from Sony’s PSN store or games readily available on the UMD disc format. Look on amazon, many great games of the past years are still available for cheap. Latest games won’t break your bank either. And the Minis, downloadable cheap games a la iphone, are going stronger now.

After all, this is a fully fledged console in the palms of your hands. Games usually have a lot of depth, very decent graphics, great sound, and good controls. Forget about touching a screen and shaking your iphone to control a game. The PSP is all about traditional console gaming and as such a great gaming device.

There has been criticism for the PSP’s game library as long as there has been the PSP, but I find it big and diverse enough to keep me entertained for many more years to come. If you happen to be an adult and you are looking for decent racing games, sports games, shooters, RPGs the PSP got you covered. I haven’t played any of the other titles more suited to younger kids and they might be better off with a Nintendo DS. And, if you’re female and so much in love with puzzles, the DS seems to have more choices, too.

Furthermore, the PSP is a great content player. Be it music or movies, I love especially the widescreen to watch TV shows episodes I missed. The screen is not of such a high resolution than the retina display of the latest iphone and ipod touch, but I do prefer it over the Apple device to watch movies on the go due to its bigger physical size. Some people have complained about the scan lines being visible, and it’s true that one can see the pixels of the screen a bit, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. Everything looks vibrant and crisp enough to be enjoyable.

As for music, the PSP plays different formats, but the software lacks the controls to administer your library in an efficient way. The iPod and iTunes are far better, but this is also what they were originally created for.

In conclusion, I fell a little bit into that trap of comparing the PSP and some of its functionality with the iphone/ipod touch since they both share some of the same functionality. Nevertheless, one should not forget the principal tasks each device was designed for. While the iphone gives you gaming as an added bonus to being a phone, music and video player, apps computer, etc.,gaming is the core functionality of the PSP with the added features of content playing, a bit of internet browsing and Skype. The PSP doesn’t shine in any of the added functionality features as the iphone does (for videos I do prefer the PSP though), but as a gaming console it is superb.

While the iphone on a transatlantic flight will give up after some hours of gaming or movie playing, the PSP 3000 can run basically forever if you have a second or third set of the battery it needs. Just swap the battery (it’s easy enough) and your fun is not limited by the lack of recharging opportunities while on the go.

If anything can be said about the price than this: I do think, the PSP in its fifth year is a little bit overpriced. A price tag of $139 or so would surely help to boost some more sales before it enters its last years of the life cycle. I don’t know about Sony’s plans but I wouldn’t bet that the PSP will survive another five years on the shelves. While there is still enough…
